Whats on the Doorstep

The pier at Catterline, directly beneath the hillside on which Northend Cottage is perched, was built in 1810 and although fishing boats operated out of the harbour for over a thousand years it is said that many of the fishermen supplemented their income by smuggling. However, nowadays Catterline is more famous for its connection with artists and its fish restaurant. The atmosphere and intrigue of Catterline never fails to attract visitors to visit more than just the once!

The Watchie - The artist, Joan Eardley once lived and worked in Catterline. Her studio, known to locals as “The Watchie” is less than 1 minutes walk (northbound) along the cliff top path, from Northend Cottage. Since Joan Eardleys’ death, the Watchie has become available for visiting artists to enjoy whilst working on their own projects. Often it may be possible to visit and see the current resident artist at work.

The Creel Inn and Restaurant - 2 minutes stroll along the cliff top path, is renowned for its seafood including fresh crab and lobster caught in Catterline Bay by Jack (who you can see most mornings landing his daily catch). A good selection of real ales are served together with a fine selection of whisky. A hostiliry you are sure to visit more than once.
